an institutionalized loved-one can have a profound effect on how family members view the professionalism and attractiveness of a health facility and staff. In fact, this can have a serious effect on occupancy rates at a nursing facility, which in turn financially affects an organization.
Can buildings heal? JW: We know that certain qualities in the built
environment enhance human health. For example, for the treatment of acute major depression, hospitalized patients are often exposed to broad spectrum lighting for periods of time. This is done to stabilize and improve a patient’s mood (affect). Buildings with ample natural light and supplemental broad spectrum lighting sources (when natural light is unavailable or limited) are thought to have the same effect—that is, an anti-depressive action on an occupant. Likewise, ergonomically designed work spaces can significantly reduce repetitive movement disorders and enhance an occupant’s muscle and skeletal system through proper toning and range of motion movements while performing work at a workstation.
