PECO Green Roof: Largest retrofit green roof in Pennslyvania - 45,000-square-foot Roofmeadow design, Furbish install, PHS oversees maintenance and leads public tours. 2. Art Museum Sculpture Garden: Olin designed sculpture garden, green roof on fresh air ventilated parking garage fit beautifully into hillside. 3. INHP: Independence National Historical Park; Independence Hall, the liberty bell, the Constitution Center- Olin designed landscapeall on structure. 4. Race St. Pier: The first piece in the new Delaware River Water Front, Race St. Pier designed by Field Operations (NYC’s Highline) offers stunning view of Delaware River and Ben Franklin Bridge. 1. University of Pennsylvania Nursing School green roof This tour highlights the stormwater story from the perspective of a public elementary school, public high school and an urban college campus. Greening Greenfield was a collaboration of parents, students, Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, and the School District of Philadelphia to green an existing public elementary school in Center City Philadelphia. Kensington High School for the Creative and Performing Arts is a new LEEDplatinum certified public school. Drexel Smart House is a student-led, multidisciplinary project to retrofit an urban home to serve as a “living laboratory” for exploring cutting edge design and technology. Participants will conduct research and develop designs in the areas of environment, energy, interaction, health, and lifestyle with the ultimate goal of improving quality of life in the urban residential setting. Newtown Square: Largest green roof in Pennsylvania, this 48,000-square-foot roof was designed by Roofmeadow. This LEED-platinum project features green roof areas on three levels including extensive and intensive profiles. The intensive areas are irrigated with rainwater that is harvested onsite, the turf area is irrigated with the base flood method – a traditional German technique involving ponded water. Water management is a key component of the building and site design and the green roof areas are critical to the site stormwater management strategy. The integration of the rainwater harvesting system and the green roof represent an ideal irrigation method, and the need to use potable water to sustain the vegetation is minimized if not eliminated. 14 LIVING ARCHITECTURE MONITOR SUMMER 2011
