Access green roofs rarely open to the public and meet with the architects, landscape architects and designers who created these outstanding projects and learn the secrets of their success. TOUR 4: CITY OF NEIGHBORHOODS December 3, 2011 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. DESTINATIONS: TOUR 5: FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENTALISM December 3, 2011 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. DESTINATIONS: 1. 100 K House 2. Big Green Block This program would feature results from a PHS design charrette, “Stormwater House,” which focused on small-scale residential green interventions that can be scaled up to impact overall neighborhood stormwater management. Providing examples of in-fill housing that is making a difference in Philadelphia neighborhoods, the program includes non-profit, design professional, and community leaders. 1. Friends Center 2. Swarthmore From thermal wells to rain gardens to green roofs, Philadelphia’s Quaker institutions have been the region’s first adapters and innovators of sustainable design practices. Founded by Quaker William Penn, Philadelphia is home of the American Friends Service Committee and more than a dozen Friend’s schools and Quaker-based colleges. Quaker values guided local institutions to green building practices. Friends Center, Germantown Friends School, Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania and Swarthmore College have all built sustainable facilities to reflect their values and educate their students (and everyone else) about environmental stewardship and sustainable design. At each site, participants will be welcomed by the host institution and introduced to the values that informed the project and shape its purpose. A member of the project design team will address the technical aspects of implementation and performance (featuring two LEEDplatinum and one LEED-gold certified projects). The institution and designers will address how values shaped the design process and outcomes.
