Green Roofs - Living Architecture Monitor - Summer 2011 - (Page 8)

WELCOME CitiesAlive is unlike any other conference and this year Green Roofs for Healthy Cities is highlighting how green roofs and walls can support the restoration of our urban waterways in Philadelphia – the City of Brotherly Love. C itiesAlive is a truly multi-disciplinary event, attracting a wide range of business professionals, research scientists, policymakers, clients, designers, as well as installation and maintenance specialists. This broad range of experts allows many opportunities for collaboration. This year we anticipate a stronger international business contingent of delegates, with the board meeting of the World Green Infrastructure Network (WGRIN) being held during the preconference program and few international green roof events this fall. Moreover, the City of Philadelphia — with its deep and unprecedented commitment to implementing billions of dollars in green infrastructure investment to restore its urban waters over the next 25 years — is the perfect place to build or enhance your business, and to learn first-hand what the future has in store. We are delighted to be working closely with officials from the City of Philadelphia and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society who are co-hosting our event with us this year. They are planning a fabulous reception on Thursday night at the infamous Philadelphia Museum of Art, made famous by the blockbuster movie, Rocky. Our Local Host Committee has also done a great job in pulling together tours that will feature some of the most interesting projects, and tell the story of Philadelphia’s history, and current development challenges. At our closing reception we will celebrate youth and discover their ideas for a greener residential block in downtown Philadelphia. We are at the two-year anniversary of the launch of our first Green Roof Professional (GRP) exam in Atlanta. We now have close to 500 accredited GRP. Congratulations to you all! You are the leaders of this industry, and at GRHC we will work hard to ensure that your businesses continue to flourish. GRPs are the qualified experts who are in the business of manufacturing, designing, installing and maintaining green roofs. GRHC is also a continuing education provider for the AIA, ASLA, USGBC, and CaGBC so there are ample opportunities to earn your continuing education units (CEUs) throughout the conference. Welcome to Philadelphia CitiesAlive where you can earn your CEUs while taking in the latest and greatest developments in living architecture! PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT At GRHC we continue to push ahead in terms of providing leading-edge professional development opportunities for green building professionals. At CitiesAlive we are pleased to launch the second course in our Integrated Water Management for Buildings and Sites series. Given the growing shortage of water in many areas, we have been developing this series in partnership with the American Society of Irrigation Consultants, with corporate support and leadership from Ewing. If you missed the first course last year, not to worry since it will be available on the morning of Nov. 30th, 2011 during the pre-conference program. This year we are also featuring Paul Kephart, GRP, Rana Creek, an award-winning green roof designer in a hands-on workshop on Integrated Design Practices, a critical element for achieving high-performance restorative buildings. At CitiesAlive we are also exploring the “green within,” with special presentations and “On the Roof With...” discussion panels on researching the performance of indoor greening, developing a new growing media standard, integrated design and more. Philadelphia is a beautiful historic city and we encourage you to stay for the weekend and take in the many beautiful sights and sounds this very walkable city has to offer. The Sheraton Philadelphia City Center is situated right in the downtown core, a short walk from dozens of attractions. We look forward to seeing you in Philadelphia at CitiesAlive. Jeffrey L.
