Taking the Small to the Large

With various majors, numerous student organizations, and seemingly endless amenities, larger universities pride themselves on offering students a tremendous opportunity for interaction and development. Noted for their initiatives and resources, these campuses are often looked to as a source of inspiration for smaller colleges across the nation. Individuals, however, may overlook the potential that larger universities have to learn from smaller colleges, particularly in the development of residential life environments. From personalized programming and faculty interaction to the overall design of

facilities, these smaller institutions are a valuable resource in building successful environments that work well in both smaller and larger campus settings. As the assistant dean for residence life at Abilene Christian University in Texas, which has an approximate housing capacity of 2,165, John Delony was prompted by a combination of research and personal encounters to explore this concept. Through his experience as a young student affairs employee at a small college and as a graduate student at a large university, Delony had the opportunity to analyze various examples of the

higher education continuum. In his research, Delony found that smaller schools generally suffered from issues regarding their self worth. He noted that they were predominantly focused on growing larger or “puffing” up, striving to be something that in reality they were not. Hoping to help these small colleges hold their heads high and embrace their niche, Delony set out to find ways in which these institutions could offer beneficial ideas and resources to their larger counterparts. One of the key elements of Delony’s findings was to create more engagement points
