students, faculty, staff) to house in empty spaces can also prove beneficial in meeting occupancy needs. Finally, facility improvements can be made in less desirable spaces. Despite such efforts and creative planning, however, under-enrollment often presents more challenges than benefits to most housing operations.

PUTTING PRINCIPLES INTO PRACTICE
In the opening scenario, the incoming freshman class well exceeded the 1,150 spaces initially reserved for them, but solutions to accommodate the largerthan-expected class were achieved through a multifaceted approach. Putting well-informed occupancy management strategies into play, the decision was made to assign 150 of the additional students to extended

housing options in double rooms converted to triples. Students impacted by this assignment type were offered a $50 per week rebate on their housing costs until one of the students could relocate into a regular occupancy space. These additional bed spaces were made available in two halls in order to help regulate hall density and alleviate general overcrowding. An additional 48 students moved into eight student lounges outfitted to hold six students in each. Fiftytwo rising sophomores accepted a generous offer to be released from their housing contract, which allowed them to seek off-campus accommodations, and 40 incoming freshmen were able to change their residency status to commuter when the allowable commuting radius from the university was increased from 15 to 20 miles. Lastly, renovation plans

for one residence hall were modified so that only two floors in a four-story, 120-bed space residence hall would be renovated during the upcoming academic year, leaving the top two floors available for the remaining 60 students. The decision to defer renovation also gave the institution an extra year to obtain additional funding for the remaining renovations. Once the over-enrollment problem is solved and all the necessary housing for these students has been secured, there is only one thing left to do. That’s right. Start thinking about next year. TS
