VISION

Planning to Plan

In its simplest terms, the core mission of a professional association is to help its members be better at their jobs. This means removing barriers to success and aligning association opportunities to the profession’s needs. These opportunities may take many forms, but what is most important is that they simultaneously address the needs of the profession and the needs of the individual. This was in our mind when a recent ACUHO-I survey disclosed that more than 52 percent of the positions at our member institutions were categorized as hall director or an equivalent job title. However that same survey showed those who supervise hall directors self-identified as being least effective in managing professional development planning with their staff. Plus, they said they infrequently used competencies in that supervision. So, the question was, how can ACUHO-I help remove these barriers to individual ACUHO-I IS and organizational success?

OFFERING A NEW TOOL TO AID PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT. ACTUALLY, IT’S AN ENTIRE TOOLKIT.

One step is a new tool to aid the professional development planning process. Actually, it’s an entire toolkit. The ACUHO-I Self-Assessment Toolkit for Hall Directors and their Supervisors is an online resource that uses competency-based self-assessments to create professional development plans and support the coaching process.

This resource guides development and instills consistency in competencies and self-ratings. Because it’s online there is less paperwork and more conversations. Because it generates information for the director and the supervisor, there is aggregate data of self-assessment ratings to help with departmental planning and to display a department’s commitment to staff development. Thanks are due to J. Diane “DP” Porter-Roberts at the University of Florida who was the subject matter expert in developing the toolkit, powered by her graduate hall director competency model research and practice. The program will be live in October. However, from now until the end of the year campuses can register all of their hall directors for a 50 percent discount (that means $40 each rather than $80) as long as they agree to provide feedback to ACUHO-I through a self-study of how they implemented the toolkit. More details about this discount and the program are online at www.acuho-i.org under the “Programs & Events” tab. I urge you to explore this program and see how it can help make the most out of your professional development. After all, we know how valuable it can be.

Alma R. Sealine, ACUHO-I President
