Logic models help staff connect the dots and see the fruits of their labor.

Res life staff at Ball State use logic models to map out their programming goals.
Imagine being able to represent a departmental initiative or new program in a precise, coherent manner, clearly articulating the short-term, intermediate, and longterm learning outcomes while also describing all actions, inputs, and outputs that will enable you to achieve these outcomes – and do it all in one page. Now imagine that same one page helping you to plan budgets and meet staffing needs, allowing you to manage stakeholder relationships, and enabling you to map out your shortand long-term assessment plans.
Further imagine that same one page helping you to make tough decisions based on sound data, careful analysis, and a healthy dialogue with your stakeholders. Sound implausible? It can all be done with a logic model – a tool that, when used effectively, can significantly strengthen your ability to measure learning outcomes, refocus resources, and align limited resources with manageable, measurable, and realistic outcomes. At the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, we have utilized logic models to build and strengthen
living-learning programs; design assessment strategies; conduct shortand long-term planning; support annual budgeting; complement and guide staff recruitment, training, and evaluation; conduct curriculum development; and align program operations, assessment, and outcome measurement. Many times, in recent years, our logic models have helped us to analyze our intended outcomes, measure our impact or lack of impact, and, often, make tough decisions regarding eliminating or re-focusing some of our work.
