By offering courses to multiple communities, LLCs can maximize the benefit of small classes being held in residential classrooms. Kari Schueller, former program coordinator for the Women in Math, Science and Engineering LLC and now coordinator of the Health Professions LLC at the University of Illinois,
explains how versatile logic models can be: “I used the logic model as a working document to allow the program to grow and change over time, to respond to new developments in the STEM field, to respond to new student expectations, and to develop new courses.”

Logic models can be useful in revealing particular staffing patterns that need to be changed. In the University of Illinois’ LLC
neighborhood, the four communities were led by two program coordinators, who recruit students, develop the program, create and maintain relationships with stakeholders, cultivate a set of courses, and work with other LLC staff on assessment. Feedback from students, stakeholders, and instructors revealed that program staff were valued for providing opportunities for interaction, encouraging strong student
