were accepting of all perspectives and methods of dealing with situations and providing growth opportunities. I’m heartbroken because I really loved this field when I got into it. While I will value the relationships and experiences I have developed, it hurts to know that I never really fit,” Jordan explains. He says he had some doubts about his choice of a career in housing, even during graduate school, and attributes much of his questioning to both work style and fit: “As my career unfolded, I realized the things I’m good at and value are not valued in housing at a high level. Because my methods of supervision are unconventional for this field and there is no scoreboard to prove they are more or less effective, I have struggled at times with supervisors who either
don’t agree with or don’t understand them.” He will be graduating with a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in November and explains that his impending graduation was the specific trigger to leaving the field: “Through my MBA experience, I realized the issues and methods that people in residence life describe as politics really are just personal relationship issues.” He believes he can use either his MBA or master’s in higher education while working in residence life, but was unable to see a way he could use both. Changing careers is certainly not unique to those in campus housing or student affairs, and it is a difficult decision for anyone. Donahoe assumed that she would live in a residence hall much longer into her
career and that the trajectory of her career would be a more traditional residence life path: “My life changed, and the benefits of living in have not been strong enough to keep me interested in this lifestyle. I assumed I would always want to be a ‘college kid’; however, I have grown up and would love the adult life.” ts
