The Academic Village Utilizes Dedicated Learning Spaces
Hassayampa Academic Village (HAV) in the South Neighborhood of Arizona State University’s Tempe Campus represents further integration of more dedicated learning spaces in the academic complex. The 2,000-bed village is composed of scaled communities of 40, 80, and 120 freshman students with overlaps that foster unprogrammed events. When planning for the village began in 2003, the concept of the academic village had evolved, placing additional emphasis on connectivity to both human and digital resources, with a higher ratio of learning spaces to living spaces. The completed HAV communities are composed of four-story to seven-story buildings that reinforce the campus mall axis. Double-occupancy residential suites are intentionally small but have floor-to-ceiling windows and individual bathrooms. Resident advisors are located at the center of each floor. Services and amenities include 24-hour campus security, front desk services, a tutoring center, academic advising, study lounges on each floor, dining and retail services, and a high-density digital network, both wired and wireless. The play component is woven throughout the village. Students can traverse the complex through a series of sky terraces, gather in large lounges with full kitchens and entertainment equipment, or mingle on patios and courtyards in the fresh air. Communities within the village are dedicated to different majors, and freshmen must choose which community they want to live in based on the academics they want to pursue. For example, Camp Carey is a community that operates in conjunction with the W. P. Carey School of Business and occupies two buildings in the HAV complex that are dedicated to students in this major. The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences (CLAS) community at HAV caters to over 900 first-year students and offers on-site classrooms used for first-year courses, workshops, and supplemental instruction groups. Every floor of the multi-story buildings has an independent study room equipped with table and white boards. An academic student support facility, located in one of the wings, includes tutoring, test reviews, academic coaching, and academic skills workshops.
