The University Explorers community allows first-year students to live together in a designated floor or building of a community, where they are provided with academic and social support to aid in their transition from high school to college through co-curricular and diversified programs that help them sample different majors and career options.
Academic Villages Are Fully Integrated
Reopening in the fall of 2011, the $49 million William H. Johnston Building renovation project at Florida State University exemplifies full integration of living, learning, and social experiences within an academic village. In line with the goals of the Millennial living-learning environment, the design incorporated more than the typical amount of non-programmed spaces, including generously sized corridors, niches, and a striking five-story atrium, which was designed as a “third place” where students can feel a sense of ownership. halls and dining, the Jacobean-style building was transformed by being designed around the atrium, which, along with interior glass partitions, offers transparency to all spaces, making the building more secure and easier to navigate. Here students can see what is going on, and they are compelled to enter the building and engage with others.“Behind the 1939 Gothic façade we now have a total of 144,000 square feet, which includes a ‘Learning Commons’ as well as lecture halls, classrooms, laboratory spaces, and studios,” says Florida State University President Eric Barron. “It is all about interdisciplinary collaboration – and the new mix of resources and inhabitants here both reflects and supports that goal.” The upper levels house some departments for the College of Visual and Performing Arts, as well as satellite offices, labs, and classroom space for the College of Human Science and the College of Communication and Information. A learning commons on the ground floor is open to the entire university as an advising, tutoring, and study commons.
