I enjoy your publication, but feel compelled to write in response to your article "Hubert and the Spin” (CFI to CFI, Volume 2, Issue 1). While I might personally agree that a spin should be demonstrated to a student as an invaluable lesson, its legality is questionable. It is clearly an aerobatic maneuver within FAR Part 91.103. And while one might find places where there are not people or structures on the ground, at least in the Northeast United States, it is hard to find a place that is not within four miles of a federal airway center line. More problematic is the requirement that all passengers wear parachutes (FAR Part 91.107 (c)), with the exception of spin instruction for a flight test or rating requiring a spin: The only rating for which a spin is required is that of a flight instructor. The article might lead some CFIs to rationalize spin demonstrations as a useful training tool or confidence builder. But personal opinion should not guide conduct, which might result in disciplinary enforcement.
