Ignorant or reckless? You decide!
WHILE HUMOROUS in presentation, this pilot safety announcement tackles a very serious problem—reckless behavior of pilots who fail to understand the risks of hazardous maneuvering, or who deliberately take significant risks. Consider this: Nearly onethird of all fatal accidents in the last 10 years occurred during maneuvering flight, which includes buzzing, formation flying, aerial work, stalls/spins, canyon flying, aerobatics, and normal flight operations.

Please share this short video with students and CFIs. Think of it as an intervention to lure wannabe daredevils away from attempting dangerous stunts—pilots influenced by bad judgment, who cannot grasp the danger of reckless flying. Know the type? Spread the word and help prevent a bad flight outcome for someone at risk. Also, share ASI’s free resources on related topics (www.airsafetyinstitute. org/safetyspotlights).

ASI's newsletter for the serious flight instructor
I just read “The five-step teacher” (CFI to CFI, Volume 2, Issue 3) by Rod Machado, and want to compliment you on a very well written piece. I was particularly pleased to hear you talk about defining objectives in behavioral terms. It's so important to base our teaching goals and assessment of the learning process on behaviors, rather than our perception of the student; and it's equally important to evaluate the learning process based on what the student demonstrates as having learned, rather than what the instructor merely believes he/she has taught. I'm just writing to say how good it was to read this in a piece going out to the community of flight instructors. —Michael Melton, CFI Greetings Michael: Thank you so much for that nice comment and I sure do appreciate your taking the time to write. Your comment about evaluating the learning process on what the student actually learns is very, very important. It’s pretty clear to me that in today’s instructional world, instructors are mistaking telling for teaching. What a shame this is. The idea of learning being a relatively permanent change in one’s behavior (motor, perceptual, or cognitive) seems to be a lost concept among even experienced instructors. You clearly have a good grasp of this idea. I think your students are very lucky to have you instructing them. —Sincerely, Rod Machado
