School of Arts and Humanities From the stage to the classroom, School of Arts and Humanities programs provide a foundation of critical thinking, artistic inventiveness, and cultural awareness that lasts a lifetime. These invaluable skills serve our graduates well in career fields that are as vast and varied as our course selection. • Buffalo State’s proximity to Buffalo’s arts and culture district provides our students with unique opportunities, including collaborations with area theaters, museums, and art galleries. • Buffalo State has the largest, most comprehensive visual arts program in SUNY. • The art education program, established in 1930, is the oldest state-sponsored preparatory program for art teachers in the United States. • The Communication Department, with more than 700 students, is the largest communication-oriented program in SUNY. And Buffalo State produces more media personalities in print, radio, and television than any other SUNY institution. • Buffalo State is the only public college or university in New York State to hold national accreditation from the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC). • Buffalo State has the fastest-growing undergraduate music education program in the SUNY system. • Buffalo State limits its language classes to 25 students; most language courses for majors are even smaller. School of Education Buffalo State has a long and distinguished history— dating back to 1871—of preparing teachers to excel in a wide range of classroom settings. We’re the teacher education experts. Students learn through a strong, diverse on-campus curriculum as well as through direct student-teaching experiences at more than 40 collaborating schools in the area. • Buffalo State offers 23 undergraduate education degrees, including our heralded childhood and exceptional education programs. We also offer more than 70 teacher certification programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. • Buffalo State sends more graduates into public education teaching positions than any other SUNY campus. • Buffalo State is the only SUNY institution that has received continuous accreditation by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) since the organization conducted its first review of institutions in 1954. • Buffalo State offers a joint doctoral program in special education with the State University of New York at Buffalo. • Starting salaries for teachers average about $35,000—higher in many large cities—with the potential to earn as much as $90,000. Teachers who become principals and administrators earn even more. School of Natural and Social Sciences Programs in the School of Natural and Social Sciences help students develop skills in analytical thinking, quantitative methods, problem solving, critical thinking, and effective communication. Students are taught to use the facts, concepts, and principles learned in the field and in the classroom for practical application. • Buffalo State’s School of Natural and Social Sciences is home to innovative research centers, including the Great Lakes Center, a high-profile institute committed to providing the best possible science for understanding and preserving the Great Lakes and their watersheds. • Buffalo State is the only SUNY institution to offer an undergraduate degree in forensic chemistry. • Economics and finance students recently ranked first on a national assessment critical thinking exam. • Buffalo State’s chemistry program is accredited by the American Chemical Society. Only one-fourth of the undergraduate chemistry programs in the country have earned this distinction. • Earth sciences majors gain valuable research and in-depth analysis experience through direct field studies in such places as Hawaii, the Grand Canyon, the Adirondacks, and Europe. School of the Professions The School of the Professions educates future professionals to lead in diverse settings and participate in the community through partnerships. The school prepares graduates for productive and successful careers in a global society. • Buffalo State has the largest undergraduate social work program in New York State. • Hospitality students earn internationally recognized certification and gain real-world experience by working at Campus House, Buffalo State’s on-campus private social club for faculty, staff, and friends. • In recent years, graduates of the mechanical engineering technology program have experienced a 100 percent placement rate because of the applied nature of Buffalo State’s program. These graduates have received starting salaries of $55,000 or more. • Fashion and textile technology majors may spend a year studying at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. • The Small Business Development Center and the International Center for Studies in Creativity, both housed within Buffalo State’s School of the Professions, extend our reach into the community and the global marketplace. 6
