For many, the beginning of a new year is a time to think about what is working well in our lives and what we want to change. With the continued challenges to our economy, many of us are experiencing higher-than-normal levels of stress. Stress can lead to health problems, including heart disease, digestive issues, difficulty sleeping, depression, obesity and skin conditions. Taking care of ourselves by strengthening our physical health is a good way to increase resistance to stress. Exercising regularly, eating a healthful diet, reducing caffeine and sugar, avoiding alcohol, cigarettes and drugs, and getting enough sleep are important strategies for managing stress through healthy lifestyle choices. I urge you to identify at least one strategy for taking care of yourself in 2012. I think you’ll be surprised at the positive difference it will make. At Hillcrest Hospital, we’re committed to the belief that our entire community benefits when we as individuals are physically, mentally and spiritually healthy.
