With lightning speed, the trauma team gathers for the arrival of a 10-year-old
boy at Memorial Hospital Central. The boy, who jumped from a second-story window to escape a fire in his home, is burned over 34 percent of his body. “He’s awake, alert—speaking with a hoarse voice. No other past medical history. Unknown allergies. Unknown meds. And we don’t know what he landed on,” said Dan Lauer, trauma team lead in Memorial’s emergency department.
