When Jaynil Shah arrives for therapy, “everyone cheers for him because the staff and patients remember how far he’s come,” says physical therapist Leah O’Brien. GMC: SpecialtyTrained in Stroke Care Gwinnett Medical Center is one of the few hospital systems in the region with accreditation as a primary stroke center. This means that doctors, nurses and staff are specialty-trained in stroke care. Glancy Rehabilitation Center has earned the Three Year Award, the highest level of accreditation available through the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). In addition, Glancy Rehab has earned CARF designation as a stroke specialty program by demonstrating that the program meets the highest national and international standards of quality for stroke rehabilitative care. side, with speech, language and cognitive impairments,” says Sunil Bhole, M.D., medical director of GMC’s Glancy Rehabilitation Center. “His case was complex with his dual diagnosis of a brain injury and a stroke.” At Glancy Rehabilitation Center, a team of rehabilitation professionals immediately set to work. For nearly a month, the staff worked intensively with Shah for physical, speech, occupational and recreational therapy. Nov. 2 is the first day Shah remembers since the accident. “When I woke up that day,” he says, “I felt like I had been dreaming.” “By Nov. 12, he no longer needed the feeding tube and was on a regular diet,” Dr. Bhole says. “He had regained the use of his paralyzed right arm and leg, and he was walking, too.” Shah’s family was thrilled. He was finally able to return to his parents’ home. He then started Glancy Rehab’s outpatient services, a seamless transition, as he continued to see the same therapists who had helped him come so far. “He’s our rock star,” says Leah O’Brien, physical therapist at Glancy Rehabilitation Center. “When he comes Glancy Rehab staff work intensively with Jaynil Shah as he recovers from his stroke.
