willing to take the stairs and do those extra few minutes of walking.” For Underwood, some weeks are easier than others. “Some weeks I’m super-duper busy, so I can only fit cardio in here and there,” she told Women’s Health. But she still averages four to six morning sessions a week with her trainer. “And every night I’m on stage, I get another workout,” she said. When she’s home in Nashville, Underwood’s home gym has it all: an elliptical machine, a bike, an abs ball, free weights and kettlebells. tips for going vegetarian Interested in switching to a vegetarian diet but don’t know how? That’s OK. “You don’t have to do it cold turkey,” says Elizabeth Somer, R.D., author of Eat Your Way to Happiness. “Ease your way into it.” She offers these tips: Start with three. “Set a goal for yourself that three evenings a week, you’ll have a bean-based meal instead of a meat-based meal,” Somer advises. “Or, if you’re not used to cooking beans, start with one night a week.” Stir it up. Next time you make a stir-fry, go ahead and have some chicken or beef, but also add tofu so that the meat is less center-stage. Stock up. Buy cans of kidney, garbanzo and black beans, she says. Experiment. Try black bean burritos for dinner or a meatless chili. Try out tofu, which can be used in soups or as a base for salad dressing. Buy cookbooks. If you’re not an experienced cook, invest in a couple of good vegetarian cookbooks to give you ideas for great meals and help you learn how to cook vegetables properly. Take steps to prevent cold and flu For Underwood, getting sick can be a major setback, so she takes steps to prevent illness. “In our catering area we have this huge table of supplements for people—little things like vitamin C, echinacea, stuff like that, because if one person gets a cold, everybody’s getting a cold,” she told WebMD. Plus, she’s a hand-washer. “I’d rather take preventive measures than get sick and try to battle things off. So I do wash my hands quite a bit,” she told WebMD. That’s a good thing, Altmann says. “The most important thing [for cold and flu prevention] is to wash your hands frequently,” she says. “I usually tell people to assume that all surfaces are contaminated with germs. Every time you open a door, some amount of germs will be on your hand. If you rub your eyes, nose, mouth, you’re allowing germs to get into your body.” Make sure you wash your hands after you use the restroom, before you eat and before you touch your nose, mouth or eyes, she says. While soap and water is the best option, carry an alcohol-based hand sanitizer in case you don’t have access to a sink, Altmann suggests. By making sure she eats healthfully, exercises regularly and takes precautions to prevent cold and flu, Carrie Underwood makes sure she remains unstoppable. go to Stop By for a Vegetarian Meal PMC’s Atrium Café has lots of vegetarian options.
