nancy PREDICTORS An expectant mother’s pregnancy can tell a lot about her future health BY AMANDA MYERS WHAT IF AN EXPECTANT MOM’S BABY BUMP WAS LIKE A CRYSTAL BALL, and her pregnancy could predict her future health? Actually, the idea isn’t that farfetched. How a woman’s body responds to pregnancy can give her important clues about health issues that lie ahead. Pregnancy is a time when doctors can spot things they might otherwise not be looking for, says Margaret Miller, M.D., director of the American College of Physicians workshops “Medical Problems in Pregnancy,” and assistant professor of internal medicine and obstetrics and gynecology at The Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University. “We can diagnose things for the ﬁrst time that don’t come to light during nonpregnancy. For instance, if you’re predisposed to a blood clot, this information is ﬁve to six times more likely to come out during pregnancy,” Miller says.
