NursiNg Parrish Medical Center’s 2011 Professional Nurses of the Year are (from left) Stacey Black, Stella Barrett and Sherry Broadbent. The Art of Three dedicated professionals named Nurses of the Year urses have to be smart. They have to know the best clinical practices to take care of patients. Nurses must be excellent in their jobs. But Parrish Medical Center (PMC) also looks at the things nurses aren’t taught in nursing school—those indefinable aspects of nursing that set someone apart. PMC looks at how a nurse gives healing experiences to everyone all the time. Not just with clinical expertise, but with compassion, loving care, empathy and presence. Because PMC’s mission and vision run deep in its nursing staff, three nurses, instead of just one, were recognized as PMC’s 2011 Professional Nurses of the Year for National Nurses Week in May. N Stacey Black from the fourth-floor cardiovascular unit shows her strength in listening to her patients and fellow team members. By listening, she learns to understand their needs so she can help. And when she understands those needs, she places patients and families above herself and makes herself accountable for their care. She always wants to make a difference while providing expert care. Stella Barrett from the emergency department is certified as a trauma nurse. But for Barrett, being there for patients means becoming part of their families, so they are not alone in what can be a hectic and sometimes overwhelming ER. Barrett believes it’s the small things that matter most: holding someone’s hand, providing words of comfort and anticipating needs. Sherry Broadbent from the Wound Healing Center doesn’t just look at her patients as a diagnosis. She looks at their minds, bodies and spirits so she can best respond to their needs, help them overcome barriers to good health and find commonality. Broadbent doesn’t see herself alone on this journey, either; to her, she is part of a team that cares for the patient together. Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, said, “Nursing is an art … that requires an exclusive devotion … and preparation, just as any painter’s or sculptor’s work. It is … the finest of fine arts.” A common thread runs through the narratives for all three outstanding nurses from different departments. PMC’s mission—Healing experiences for everyone all the time®—is uppermost in their minds as they provide care to their patients. Congratulations and thanks go to Stacey Black, Stella Barrett and Sherry Broadbent for representing the art of nursing so well within their community and their departments.
