“We always thought we put out a good quality product, but what we all agree on is that we’ve seen that quality get better and better each year.” — J. Edward Hill, M.D. The program, which opened in 1995, has produced 76 graduates, 80 percent of whom have remained in Mississippi to practice. As the program has progressed, it has made a definite impact on family medical care in the state and region, producing a large group of quality family medicine physicians. “We always thought we put out a good quality product, but what we all agree on is that we’ve seen that quality get better and better each year,” Hill says. “That’s very encouraging to us as faculty, and we think that one of the reasons we had such a successful recruiting year was because our alumni have made a significant impact on who comes here to interview now. And we don’t have just Mississippians. We have people from other states that have heard about us and come here to look and like what they see so they want to stay.” J. Edward Hill, M.D., director of the Residency Center REAL-WORLD TRAINING Graduates of the program say the Family Medicine Residency Center offers great opportunities. “I feel like our program prepared us very well, and I think the training was exceptional overall,” says Brad Crosswhite, M.D., a family practice physician at Barnes Crossing Medical Clinic who served as chief resident at the center in 2010. “Training here in a rural setting and networking with specialists on a daily basis prepared us well to tackle the tasks we have in a busy family medical practice.” “My residency gave me great clinical experience with a tremendous diversity in patients,” says Ashley Harris, M.D., geriatric medicine physician at IMA–Tupelo and a former resident at NMMC’s Family Medicine Residency Center. “It really prepared me as I moved forward with my education and went on to do additional training in geriatrics at Harvard University in Boston. I felt Ashley Harris, M.D., geriatric medicine well prepared and had a unique perspective physician at IMA–Tupelo in medicine compared to my peers thanks to and a former resident my residency experience.” at NMMC’s Family Hill is serving as director of the program Medicine Residency Center for a second stint. NMMC hired him to establish its Family Medicine Residency Program in January 1995. He served as program director for seven years before stepping down from that role to become more involved in national and international medical organizations. Hill served as president of the American Medical Association in 2005–06. He was also chairman of the World Medical Association from 2007–11. He continued to serve on the resident faculty and maintained an active practice. “I decided to come back because I felt like I had still had a lot more to offer,” he says. “It’s been more rewarding than it was the first round. I think that’s because the staff is very stable here. The staff here is experienced: from our front office, to our nursing, to our administrative, laboratory and housekeeping staff and our faculty. It’s a lot more rewarding and a lot more fun because we were building then. Building a new program is not easy. I thought it was going to be easy, but it’s the hardest job I ever had. But also the most rewarding I ever had.” ONLINE For more information about NMMC’s Family Medicine Residency Center, call 800-THE DESK (800-843-3375) or join us online at www.nmhs.net/fmrc.php.
