In the Gym Joe Robinson knows that a varied workout will help him maintain his physical fitness and keep his routines from getting boring. that’s why he uses the elliptical machine, treadmill, stepper and rowing machine for cardio health and does circuit training on the weight machines for strength, and he always includes abdominal machines. Parrish health & Fitness center offers many types of exercise equipment, free weights, two pools (a lap pool and a warm-water pool for aqua and arthritis therapy), and a half-mile walking/running trail around the campus. If you’d rather exercise with a group, you can take advantage of the more than 80 different group fitness classes: tai chi, Zumba, spinning, belly dancing and so much more. One-third of NBCSC’s annual budget comes from its thrift shop. The shop accepts most items, and proceeds from sales are given back to the community in the form of assistance for those in need. “I’m just an old country boy trying to help as many people as I can,” Robinson says. “I saved lives in the Coast Guard. I extend lives at NBCSC.” Robinson says he is living his third career. This time it’s about giving back to people. “I thrive on giving back,” he says. He listened. Robinson recommitted himself to working out, which included regular visits to Parrish Health & Fitness Center. “I am about to turn 60, and I want to be in the best shape of my life,” Robinson says. “Sixty is exciting because I’m not on any medications, I can still run five miles, I still work out, sometimes seven days a week, and I’m not too sore to move in the morning.” On LIn E LEadIng thE Way Robinson’s leadership style is respected by his staff and volunteers. “I don’t ask them to do anything I won’t do,” he says. “Whether it’s moving furniture or hitting the gym.” Tabatha Lopez, housing coordinator at NBCSC, explains, “He encourages us to work out, and we’ll swap gym stories. How long did you do cardio? How far did you run?” Lopez says that Robinson is “a man to aspire to be.” 60 Is ExcItIng A few years ago, Robinson went through a slothful spell. “I just got lazy,” he confesses. “I wasn’t working out, and I was just too heavy for my body. I would walk across the street and my knees would hurt. “Then I was watching the news one night,” he says, “and something said to me, ‘If you want to live, you better start working out.’ ” Find a fitne ss regimen that ’s right for you !
