These close communities are places where everyone knows you by name. John (Cougar) Mellencamp celebrated this in the song “Small Town.” And who didn’t want to join Opie Taylor for fishing by the lake on The Andy Griffith Show? Although there are many benefits to living outside a metropolitan area, top-notch specialized medical expertise may not be on the list. But along the Interstate 95 corridor—from Jacksonville to Miami— orthopedic surgeon Julie N. Chevillet, D.O., possesses a rare specialty in pediatric orthopedics. And she proudly practices in North Brevard. Special care Needed While 7-month-old Carly Keyes-Diven was still in the womb, her mother, Casey Keyes, knew that something about her was unique. “When I was pregnant, I always felt something sticking out on my right side,” Keyes describes. “And when she kicked, I could literally see her foot sticking out of my side.” Carly was born with an extremely uncommon condition known as congenital dislocation of the knee. Unlike a typical newborn, Carly had a hyperextension. Her left leg bent forward from the knee, rather than backward. “She was so beautiful. I didn’t even notice her leg because she was covered in the blanket,” Carly’s dad, Chris Diven, remembers. “When I finally saw her without the covers, my heart dropped,” Diven says. “I knew something was wrong.” Carly’s pediatrician, Erica O’Bryan, M.D., was quickly brought in to assess the leg. “She looked like a beautiful, healthy baby with an obvious leg abnormality,” Dr. O’Bryan says. “There was no other distress. I carefully examined the baby and determined that she needed a specialist. It was a big help to me that Dr. Chevillet was right here, and I didn’t have to look out of town for a specialist.” Help iS oN tHe Way Keyes and Diven were relieved when they learned that they didn’t need to travel to another hospital. Dr. Chevillet would be coming to Parrish Medical Center to evaluate their baby girl. Once on-site, Dr. Chevillet conducted a thorough examination of Carly and concluded that the situation was even rarer than initially believed. 52 Vim & Vigor • sP r i n g 2 012
