left: Pediatric orthopedic specialist Julie N. Chevillet, D.O., examines 7-month-old Carly as Mom and Dad look on. Carly’s knee was straightened with a series of casts and a special nighttime harness. Below: Mom Casey Keyes and dad Chris Diven hold a happy, healthy 7-month-old Carly, whose left knee was straightened and is working the way it was meant to. According to her pediatrician, Erica O’Bryan, M.D., Carly should make a complete recovery. According to the book The Pediatric and Adolescent Knee, the incidence of knee dislocation is approximately two of every 100,000 live births; chances of an isolated dislocated knee are even slimmer. As Dr. Chevillet explains: “Usually there are other anomalies associated with a congenital knee dislocation, such as dysplasia of the hip. But in Carly’s case, the dislocation was isolated to her knee. We had to really put our heads together and look for evidence of organ or spinal issues. We concluded that Carly was a rare breed—in the best way.” Big Care Close to Home The convenience of staying close to home for Carly’s subsequent treatments was a huge benefit for her parents. “With gas prices so high, and the need for us to work so important, having Dr. Chevillet right here was a tremendous help,” Diven says. “We couldn’t have asked for a better, more helpful, caring doctor. And we are so thankful that she is right here in Titusville.” Carly’s left leg did not require surgery. Her dislocation was reducible through a series of casts, followed by a special Pavlik harness worn at night to keep her hips and knees in the proper position. Dr. O’Bryan predicts that Carly will make a full recovery, with normal growth and development. “The fact that PMC cares enough to make sure that pediatric specialists are available right here in Brevard County is important and critical to me and so many others in this area,” Dr. O’Bryan says. “Pediatricians are everywhere, and they need specialists, too.” There are many benefits to living in a small town. And if you live in Brevard County, access to top-notch medical expertise is one of them. “PMC has a strong commitment to identifying areas of need in the community and recruiting fellowship-trained, highly skilled physicians and surgeons,” Dr. Chevillet says. “We won’t necessarily be able to handle every neonatal issue, but if and when parents do need to make the journey westward to the tertiary pediatric care facilities, they are making a calculated trip, not a leap of faith, and they are not doing it alone.” Knowledge is Power Congratulations to Julie N. Chevillet, D.O.! A research project paper she co-authored with Nationwide Children’s Hospital was accepted for presentation at the Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America’s 2012 annual meeting.
