Nearly three decades ago, Fred Gallagher had a stroke and was a patient at Parrish Medical Center (PMC). Because of the excellent care he received, he wanted to give back to the hospital once he was fully recovered. Gallagher’s wife was an auxilian at PMC at the time and recruited him to join the auxiliary, too. With more than 4,000 volunteer hours logged at PMC, Gallagher and his wife, Jackie, were instrumental in helping the PMC Auxiliary establish the hospital’s Lifeline Program. Lifeline is a medical-alert service that connects people to the hospital during emergencies at a touch of a button. The Gallaghers helped install more than 100 Lifeline units in people’s homes, assisting hundreds of seniors. Today, about 350 Lifeline units are in service in the North Brevard community. In 2005, Jackie passed away and left Gallagher with no close family. While talking to a friend about his assets, the friend suggested he donate his house to a local charity because he didn’t have any heirs. Gallagher thought it was a great idea, and the first place he thought of was the hospital. “You can’t take the money with you,” Gallagher says. “And it makes you feel good to give back to your community.” He hopes that by making this gift and telling his story, he can inspire others in his position to follow his lead. “It’s people like Mr. Gallagher who make our community a better place,” says Chris Broome, Esq., chairman-elect of the Jess Parrish Medical Foundation board of directors. “This generous act of kindness will ensure his legacy lives on at the hospital and throughout North Brevard.” Celebrate National Doctors’ Day The compassionate men and women of Parrish Medical Center’s medical staff devote themselves to your health. Whatever the medical need—whether saving lives, improving lives or welcoming new lives into the world—they rise to the challenge with great caring. National Doctors’ Day is March 30. It’s the perfect occasion to honor your PMC physician by making a gift to the Jess Parrish Medical Foundation and writing a personal note of thanks to him or her. You may honor more than one doctor if you wish. The foundation will notify each physician you choose to recognize. Gift amounts are not disclosed.
