Q&A ASK The ExpErt Hospital-Based Doctors Frank Dienst, M.D., is boardcertified in internal medicine and critical care. He has been on the Parrish Medical Center medical staff for 27 years. These valuable specialists have been part of PMC since 2005 are in the hospital. The primary care physician determines the extent of care given by the hospitalist. Once patients leave the hospital, care is transitioned to their primary care physician or another care facility, like a nursing home or rehab facility. Why is having a hospitalist good for patients and their doctors? Q Hospitalists give the primary care physicians the assurance that their plan of care for their patients is supported by fellow hospital-based physicians. It allows the primary care physicians to spend more time with patients and see more patients in their offices. How does the hospitalist care team work in conjunction with PMC clinical care partners? • Why does Parrish Medical Center have hospitalists? Because the demands on physicians’ time are increasing as they work with patients in the office and the hospital, handle emergencies and respond to calls, the hospitalist program provides excellent physicians who can be focused solely on patients admitted to the hospital. When is a hospitalist called in to care for a patient? Q The hospitalist team and PMC nursing care partners work together to focus on improving care results, safe transitions from hospital to home or other care facility (e.g., nursing home or rehab facility), and using services in a cost-effective manner. This includes visiting patients at their beds when clinical care partners change shifts. • How often is a hospitalist in the hospital?
