Healing People PMC’s business office helps find ways to deliver the care you need In the Business of Y ou expect to receive a healing experience at Parrish Medical Center (PMC) or one of its family of services. It’s our mission: Healing experiences for everyone all the time®. What you might not expect is to receive a healing experience when working with our business office. But you will. Healing doesn’t just happen in operating rooms, on patient floors, in diagnostics and at other clinical locations. It happens in our business office, too. arrives for a scheduled exam or after a patient leaves the hospital. If a patient is admitted directly from a doctor’s office or through the emergency department, a business office representative will visit during the patient’s stay. Why We’re here First, PMC never closes. Ever. And this requires about 1,200 employees, 150 physicians and more than 300 volunteers. To serve you, PMC also uses high technology, such as MRI, CT scans, operating rooms, surgical equipment, patient rooms and hundreds of computers to keep everyone connected. New equipment and technologies are being implemented all the time. You want them, and we want them for you. We also have to deal with lights, water and other daily living expenses—just as you do in your home. We have to pay our bills, just as you do. PMC is North Brevard’s only hospital. Our emergency department sees more than 40,000 patients a year. Our outpatient registrations (laboratory and diagnostic tests) number more than 100,000 per year. We have more than 165,000 total patient visits annually. PMC is also North Brevard’s largest employer. The business office ensures PMC has the money to do what it does best. Financial health protects your hospital for you and for everyone else in North Brevard. An ImportAnt Component A business office—any business office—is an integral component of an organization. No organization, including a hospital, can operate in the red. If it does, it will affect services and programs. You may not realize it, but hospitals have requirements most businesses could not contemplate. For example, a car dealer isn’t told it must, by law, give away a certain number of cars knowing that it will never be paid for those cars. But, in essence, that’s what hospitals are required to do when providing care. That puts extra pressure on hospitals, which cannot operate at a loss. And that’s why a financially healthy PMC is crucial to you and everyone in our area. Being financially healthy enables PMC to have the technology, resources and people you need, when you need them. Nearly everyone who comes to the hospital deals with the business office at some time. It may be before a patient GettInG the CAre you need Our care partners see between 500 and 600 patients a month at the business office. That’s more than we used to see. Difficult times have not spared Brevard. But for us, unemployment statistics are not just numbers; they represent people. People such as the patient who came to our office who needed a solution to her insurance problem. She came into the business office understandably upset. She had lost her job and received bad news from her doctor. 6 Vim & Vigor • SP R I N G 2 012
