MD Conference Express AHA 2011 - (Page 3)

Dear Colleagues, Welcome to this special edition of MD Conference Express® – the official peer-reviewed highlights of the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions. The 2011 AHA Scientific Sessions brought together thousands of practitioners from across the globe to discuss exciting new science, devise strategies for implementing updated guidelines, and to share important advances in the practice of cardiovascular medicine. For those of you who were able to join us in Orlando – thank you for helping to make the 2011 Scientific Sessions so successful! This year’s meeting brought a particularly robust array of important new information to the forefront of cardiology with 21 late-breaking clinical trials presented and discussed. We have much work to do in the fight against cardiovascular disease and stroke, which remain leading causes of death and disability. Obesity and diabetes continue to increase worldwide. The delivery of care often falls short of evidence-based standards recommended in the AHA’s practice guidelines; and disparities in care continue to challenge healthcare delivery systems around the globe. Prevention of heart disease and stroke was a major theme of the 2011 Scientific Sessions - as you will see from the state-of-the-art and guideline update summaries in the pages of this official highlights publication. The AHA’s annual Scientific Sessions is an excellent forum for sharing the very latest knowledge, making strong connections, and advancing the understanding of how to treat and prevent cardiovascular disease and stroke. I hope the articles in this special edition of MD Conference Express will help you to implement the very best of Scientific Sessions into your practice. These topics were selected with care, and represent the most impactful highlights of the meeting. Each article was written entirely from primary sources. The presenting faculty who gave the lecture live in Orlando were invited to review and comment on the resulting summaries. Finally, the contents of this publication were subjected to a rigorous peer-review by a board of independent experts to ensure accurate, impartial, and scientifically-vetted support for your practice. I hope you will be able to join us next year in Los Angeles for Scientific Sessions 2012 and invite you to learn more about the meeting – and the benefits of being an AHA member at http://my.americanheart.org.
