4 Client Stories The Hartford Fine-Tunes its Mutual Fund Offering with Morningstar The Hartford sought out Morningstar for help developing innovative investments and communicating their value. Though the company is a relative newcomer to the mutual fund business, it leverages a reputation dating back to The Hartford’s days as the insurance leader responsible for helping New York rebuild after the Great Fire of 1835 and for protecting Abraham Lincoln’s Springfield, Illinois home. Brand synergies. The leaders of the mutual fund business saw synergies between their brand and Morningstar’s. In 2000, The Hartford’s fund group began working with Morningstar to develop its product pipeline and help the advisors using its products serve their clients. “From our perspective, Morningstar is the preeminent investment data company,” explains Marty Swanson, chief marketing officer for The Hartford Mutual Funds. “We leverage Morningstar’s vast data and information capabilities, as well as the Morningstar brand— which certainly has become the dominant brand for investors and advisors.” Tremendous analytics. On the product development side, an internal advisory group actively monitors The Hartford’s line of mutual funds, its subadvisors, and what’s going on in the industry. “Our investment advisory group really leverages Morningstar Direct for investment information and positioning versus competitors in the marketplace,” says Swanson. “The mining of data and level of analysis you can do with this research platform is tremendous. Our analysts and CFA charterholders use it to identify how our funds compare to the top funds in each category. It’s an awfully strong tool.” SM
