DDi - October 2011 - (Page 8)

8 | From the Editor Tidings of joy and sorrow ou may have noticed that our October cover story is focused on Urban Outfitters’ new bridal and special occasion store concept, BHLDN. (“Beholden”…get it? The jury is still out on the name, but we like the design and décor just fine!) It should not go unmentioned that our managing editor and cover story writer Jessie Bove—soon to be Jessie Dowd—happens to be celebrating her own wedding nuptials this month. It seemed only fitting that we inundate her with all things bridal in one calendar year. One guest scheduled to attend Jessie’s wedding in a few weeks, sadly, will not be present. Ron Knoth, DDI’s longtime friend and regular Retail Design Diva blog contributor, passed away on Sept. 10, 2011. Ron’s list of career accomplishments, spanning from working with mannequins and visual to most recently teaching at LIM College, runs the gamut of visual merchandising prowess, but it is his creative quirks that we, at this magazine, will miss most. He used words like “bailiwick” and “de rigueur” in his everyday vernacular, and kept our editorial team regularly up to date on retail’s finest New York windows, men’s fashion rebirth and the occasional Kardashian sighting. When Ron sent in his RSVP for Jessie’s wedding, he asked her if it was appropriate to wear a bowtie to an autumn wedding in Georgia (“But of course!” Jessie replied). I should note that Ron said his bowtie alternative was a novelty necktie that “looks like a goldfish.” Now, he said, he’d have a real excuse to go into Paul Stuart. When I was pregnant and griped of a nauseated appetite, Ron sent me two bags of tea in the mail—one chocolate and one vanilla—to satiate whichever taste suited me that day. When I called to thank him, he promptly said “You’re welcome” and made me promise I would not give my daughter a cute retail name like “Abercrombie” or “Saks Medina.” (I did not, thankfully.) Y I’ll never forget the day Jessie walked into my office with a box full of buttons (I mean, literally, an entire large box full to the brim with multicolored buttons)—a collection sent from Ron because he thought us Atlanta girls needed a token from the Garment District. And every time I passed a store window in New York with Ron in company, he was always first to point out the mundane in a way that made it ever more exciting—the way a mannequin’s hand placement was just so or why the color chosen for the scarf was seasonally apropos. Ron was the kind of person who treated you as if he had known you your entire life from the moment you first met him. His demeanor was comforting, and his insights into the visual merchandising industry were profound. He was the kind of man who made life feel easy and delightful, and made the visual industry seem so full of possibilities. To our blogger, our counterpart and above all our dearest friend—Ron, we will miss you endlessly. Stay fabulous, my friend.
