Company Overview Mars, Inc. Expansion, company initiatives make for a busy year hrough several of its divisions Mars Inc. enacted a multifaceted plan to advance product growth and realize company initiatives regarding sustainability practices. Mars Chocolate North America, a division of Mars, Inc., Hackettstown, N.J., announced plans to build a new manufacturing facility in Topeka, Kas. The facility, which the company touted as the first new “chocolate site built in the U.S. in 35 years,” will receive an investment of $250 million during the first phase of the project. Phase one of construction is scheduled for completion in 2013, according to the company. The plant will process M&Ms and Snickers branded products. The company also plans to expand the facility’s production capacity and add more Mars product lines in subsequent phases. In April, Mars, Inc. said it would invest $60 million over the next two years in its southeastern Tennessee facility. The company will add assembly lines for its M&Ms and Twix products, and expand an existing line for its new Pretzel M&Ms. The facility also makes the 3 Musketeers brand of candy bars in addition to M&Ms, Twix and Pretzel M&Ms. In support of its global brand strategy, Mars, Inc. announced it would concentrate distribution of brand assignments between the company’s existing advertising agency T partners, BBDO and DDB. SapientNitro and TBWA stopped advertising work on Mars brands in September. SapientNitro continues to work on digital strategy and support of the Mars corporate web site, Mars said. “We are committed to making these transitions smoothly and in keeping with the respect we have for all of our agency partners,” said Bruce McColl, global chief marketing officer of Mars. “We are grateful for the contributions that SapientNitro and TBWA have made to the growth of our brands over the years.” Mars opened the first M&M World store in London. The store covers more than 35,000 square feet and has created 170 new jobs. The store offers visitors merchandise and interactive attractions that include the Wall of Chocolate where visitors can create custom blended M&Ms selections from more than 100 clear dispensers containing both peanut and milk chocolate M&Ms in 22 colors. Mars continues to forge ahead with its sustainability initiatives. Mars Chocolate and Fairtrade International agreed to introduce Fairtrade-labeled Mars products and to work together to help farmers increase productivity and sustainability. Maltesers will be the first Mars item to have the Fairtrade mark, the company said. The product will be available in 2012 in the Bruce McColl United Kingdom and Ireland. The product will contribute more than $1 million annually to funds for cocoa farmers to invest in their farms, businesses and communities. “This agreement is a big step toward fulfilling our shared mission to empower farmers to build vibrant, sustainable livelihoods, and we’re very excited to work with Fairtrade on ways to enable commodity certification to scale across the entire industry,” said Barry Parkin, vice-president of Mars Global Chocolate. As part of the company’s partnership with Fairtrade, Mars said it also would look into how to increase its purchase of Fairtrade cocoa and support Fairtrade’s efforts to get more confectionery companies to increase their commitments to purchase more Fairtrade cocoa.
