Grain-based Foods Grain-based foods Price pressure a factor across many ranking categories wide disparity in sales trends between categories has emerged in grain-based foods. Sales were strong within several segments, as measured by unit sales data from SymphonyIRI, including certain categories such as cookies that had struggled in recent years. Just as many lost ground beginning with the category behemoth — fresh bread and rolls. With dollar sales just under $10 billion per year, the fresh bread and rolls category experienced a unit volume decline of 2% in the year ended Aug. 7 (dollar sales were up slightly, reflecting price advances). The dollar sales total makes fresh bread and rolls the largest single food category tracked by SymphonyIRI, eclipsed in the selling channels only by carbonated beverages, at $13.6 billion, and milk, at $11.6 billion. Still, the 2% unit sales decline was the second worst among the top 10 SymphonyIRI food categories. Only ice cream/sherbet had a poorer performance, A with a 4% unit volume decline. The other two categories to see declines within the top 10 both were grain-based categories: frozen dinners/entrees and cereals. Allen L. Shiver, president and chief operating officer of Flowers Foods, Inc., Thomasville, Ga., said many of the market dynamics that have been at play for years continue to create change in the bread market today. “For a while now, the white bread category has been slightly down,” he said, noting gains in soft variety bread and sandwich/ buns. “Sandwich rounds/thins, which had enjoyed strong growth since their introduction, seem to have leveled off now,” Mr. Shiver said. “But, we’re still confident that there will always be a place for rounds/thins — certain consumers will continue to seek the combination of healthy attributes and reduced calories that these products offer.” Sandwich thins had been perhaps the most Leading fresh bread unit sales by brand Nature's Own Arnold Sara Lee 165,776,000 132,703,100 129,847,500 Pepperidge Farm 91,066,280 Wonder 89,814,950 Oroweat 81,464,530 Sunbeam Stroehmann Home Pride 61,514,180 42,914,730 41,657,440 Private label Source: SymphonyIRI 1,081,039,000 dynamic segment of the bread/roll market in recent years.
