Grain-based Foods addition to the success scored by Hostess Brands, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc., Winston-Salem, N.C., posted an 8% gain in dollar sales and 3% increase in unit sales, while category leader Bimbo Bakeries USA, Horsham, Pa., sustained a 1% decrease in dollar sales and 4% decrease in unit sales. Muffin sales again were strong, with dollar and unit sales up 5% and 2% during the 52 weeks ended Aug. 7. Bimbo Bakeries led the way with a dollar sales spike of 7%, while Hostess Brands was up 22% and private label rose 9%. Aug. 7, the brand’s sales rose nearly 6% and accounted for more than 22% of the total share of the category, according to SymphonyIRI. DiGiorno, a Glendale, Calif.-based Nestle USA Inc. brand, has benefitted over the past Leading frozen pizza unit sales by brand DiGiorno Totino’s Party Pizza Red Baron 131,869,200 130,949,500 73,676,160 Pizza freeze Frozen pizza, a category that has flourished amid difficult economic times, slowed in 2011. In the 52 weeks ended Aug. 7, dollar sales in the frozen pizza category tracked by SymphonyIRI were $3,144,307,000, down 2% from the same period a year ago. Unit sales also were lower, easing 4% to 1,023,215,000. The decline in frozen pizza sales is in stark contrast to what has been the norm in recent years. Dollar sales in the 52 weeks ended Aug. 8, 2010, were up 3%, according to SymphonyIRI. The downtrend in the segment might be more noticeable if not for strong growth in the category leading DiGiorno brand. DiGiorno’s success has been important to Nestle as some of the company’s other brands have sustained losses in the past year. For example, the company’s No. 2 brand, Tombstone, suffered a 7% loss in dollar sales, while its No. 3 brand, California Pizza Kitchen, was down 9%. A similar story is playing out at Schwan Food Co., Marshall, Minn., where the company’s top frozen pizza brand, Red Baron, is performing exceptionally well while others are struggling. Dollar sales of Red Baron, the No. 2 brand in the segment with sales of $279,312,700, rose 4% in the 52 weeks ended Aug. 7 on a 3% increase in unit sales, according to SymphonyIRI. But where the signature Red Baron line has flourished, other Schwan frozen pizza brands have struggled. Dollar sales of Freschetta were down a shade less than 1%, though the company has been innovative in the line with the launch of Freschetta Simply … Inspired and Freschetta By The Slice. Meanwhile, sales of Tony’s, Schwan’s No. 3 brand with sales of $116,778,700, were down 22%. Newman’s Own, Inc., Westport, Conn., is one of the smaller players in frozen pizza in terms of dollar sales but has been one of the most successful in generating year-over-year growth. For Newman’s Own, innovation has played a key role in growing the brand. Last November the company added three new varieties to the Newman’s Own Thin & Crispy Crust frozen pizza line: white, roasted vegetable, and sausage. The company now has 8 varieties in the line.
