Beverages intermingled in 2011. The Campbell Soup Co., Camden, N.J., introduced V8 V-Fusion + Energy drinks and V8 Energy Shots. Each beverage provides one combined serving of vegetables and fruit as well as a natural energy boost from green tea extract. Each serving contains 80 mg of caffeine, has 50 calories and provides an excellent source of B vitamins. They have no added sugar. “We are branching into the energy drink market with the kinds of nutritious beverages that V8 is known to deliver,” said Dale Clemiss, vice-president of V8 Beverages. “People can now feel good about drinking an energy drink or shot with a combined serving of vegetables and fruit and powered naturally by green tea.” U.S. retail sales of non-aseptic energy drinks grew 11% to go over $1 billion for the 52 weeks ended Aug. 7, according to SymphonyIRI. Brand leader Red Bull saw sales jump 12% to $448.9 million. Monster brand sales soared 26% to $216.7 million. The Beverage Marketing Corp., New York, noted energy drinks and energy shots have different target audiences and distribution networks. “Energy drinks skew younger than energy shots and mainly utilize direct-store delivery (D.S.D.) distributors, whereas energy drinks often go direct to stores or are transported store to store by so-called ‘trunk slammers,’” the B.M.C. said. The Beverage Marketing Corp. also has noticed the growth of relaxation beverages, including a tendency to differentiate between night-time and day-time products. For example, the night formula for RelaxZen contains valerian and melatonin whereas the day formula of RelaxZen does not. “In relaxation beverages, the different distribution models are not as apparent, as D.S.D. distributors are increasingly eager to distribute dietary supplements in the form of shots, given the LEADING SINGLE-SERVE energy drink vendors Red Bull North America, Inc.
