Stocks of butter in cold storage on Aug. 31 were up 12% from a year ago, while total natural cheese stocks were up slightly, the U.S.D.A. said in its monthly Cold Storage report. Prices for most dry dairy products were well above year-ago levels at the end of September 2011, reflecting generally tight supplies and good demand, especially for export, except for buttermilk powder prices, which were about even. C.M.E. Group butter prices were below year-ago levels and cheddar cheese block and barrel prices were slightly lower as the third quarter ended. In its September Livestock, Dairy and Poultry Outlook, the U.S.D.A. forecast prices for nonfat dry milk to average around $1.51½ a lb, up 30% from $1.17 in 2010. Dry whey was forecast to average 51½c a lb, up 38% from 37c in 2010.
