Evitando los peligros
El Departamento de Salud y Seguridad Ocupacional de los EE.UU. (OSHA) ha desarrollado una variedad de guías para ayudar a los empleados a mantenerse seguros mientras desempeñan sus trabajos incluyendo los de las instalaciones de procesamiento de aves. La herramienta de OSHA en la red “Poultry Processing Industry eTool”, se encuentra en su sitio en http://www. osha.gov/SLTC/etools/poultry, y resalta los peligros potenciales en una planta de procesamiento de aves y hace sugerencias acerca de cómo pueden controlarse. Algunos de los peligros de seguridad y salud a los que se están expuestos los trabajadores de sanidad en la planta incluyen: Soluciones posibles: ● Use la siguiente protección efectiva para los trabajos de limpieza menores que son rutinarios, repetitivos o desempeñados como parte esencial del proceso de producción: ● Implemente procedimientos de control de energía (aislamiento/ apagado) ● Uso apropiado de las guardas/rejas barreras inter aseguradas ● Uso de interruptores apropiadamente designados o botones que estén colocados en posiciones seguras de abierto/apagado cuando los aditamentos se encuentran bajo el control exclusivo del empleado realizando la tarea ● Entrene a los empleados acerca de la ubicación y uso de los aditamentos de control de circuito ● Implemente procedimientos de control de energía de equipo (aislamiento/apagado) para todos los otros trabajos de limpieza ● Reemplace las tapas de los desagües tan pronto como el área esté limpia

Choque eléctrico –
Los empleados pueden experimentar choques eléctricos con el agua que está en contacto con conexiones eléctricas o cajas de interruptores o con reensamblajes de conexiones eléctricas después de que se han desensamblado para la limpieza. Soluciones posibles: ● Aísle y etiquete el circuito eléctrico cuando sea posible hacerlo ● Use y mantenga el alambrado y conexión a tierra adecuados ● Mantenga cubiertas todas las cajas eléctricas ● Use equipo aprobado para lugares húmedos ● Instituya un programa de inspección regular que busque instalaciones eléctricas y equipo gastados o mantenidos inadecuadamente

Cortaduras, laceraciones y amputaciones –
Cuando los trabajadores de sanidad retiran las cuchillas de las rebanadoras u otro equipo con cuchillas, pueden cortarse o lacerarse fácilmente. Cualquier cortada que no se trate inmediatamente puede infectarse como resultado de trabajar con aves. Soluciones posibles: ● Implementar procedimientos de aislado/apagado ● Proveer guantes resistentes a cortaduras para los trabajadores que retiran cuchillas del equipo ● Limpiar y desinfectar todas las cortaduras inmediatamente

Peligros químicos – Caídas de escaleras o equipo –
Los empleados suben a escaleras o equipo para poder alcanzar adecuadamente todas las superficies para limpiarlas. Soluciones posibles: ● Asegúrese de que las plataformas o escaleras portátiles son del tamaño y altura apropiados para el trabajo y que se encuentran en buenas condiciones ● Prohíba subirse al equipo Los trabajadores de sanidad usan químicos como limpiadores que pueden causar irritaciones o quemaduras en la piel u ojos. Soluciones posibles: ● Entrene a los empleados acerca de los peligros de los limpiadores que usan ● Provea guantes, protección para los ojos y otro equipo de protección para prevenir daño a la piel y ojos por contacto ● Evalúe nuevas aplicaciones y sistemas de distribución de químicos antes de usar de manera que puedan identificarse los peligros y el equipo de protección adecuado. ■
